Knitted scarf and cap for a little boy
The choice of headwear for boys is very poor in our local shops. You can find some bright and nice caps at bazaar but most of them are 100% synthetic yarn. If you want your little boy to stand out of the crowd, make a nice striped cap and scarf set from soft half-wool yarn.
You will need:
• Half-wool yarn of aran weight – grey, blue and burgundy colors
• Needles No 3 and 3,5
• Crochet hook No 2,5
• A piece of cardboard
The patterns used for this knitted set:
• Rib 3 x 3 – knit three, purl three across, in the 2nd row follow the pattern
• Garter stitch – knit every row
• Stockinette stitch – knit first row, purl second row
• Rib combined with garter stitch – 1st row: knit across, 2nd row: purl 4, knit 3. Repeat two rows.
To knit the cap cast on 104 stitches using blue yarn and work 22 rows in rib 3 x 3.
Join grey half-wool yarn and work 4 rows in garter stitch.
Join burgundy yarn and work 6 rows in stockinette stitch.
Change to grey half-wool yarn and work 4 rows in garter stitch.
Change to blue yarn and work 6 rows in stockinette stitch.
Repeat steps 2 – 6. Now the main body portion of your cap is ready and you can start knitting the top. Keep on changing the yarn colors.
1st row: selvage stitch, knit 15, knit 2 together, knit 2 twisted together, knit 30, knit 2 together, knit 2 twisted together, knit 30, knit 2 together, knit 2 twisted together, knit 15, selvage stitch.
2nd row: follow the pattern.
3rd row: selvage stitch, knit 14, knit 2 together, knit 2 twisted together, knit 28, knit 2 together, knit 2 twisted together, knit 28, knit 2 together, knit 2 twisted together, knit 14, selvage stitch.
4th row: follow the pattern.
Work 18 rows in the same manner decreasing stitch by stitch. Finally you’ll have only 40 stitches on your needles.
Use your crochet hook to move all the stitches of the last row to a strand of yarn and tighten the top of the cap.
Sew the edges of the cap on the back using mattress stitch. Hide the yarn ends in the process of sewing.
In one of my tutorials I showed how to make a yarn pom-pom. Fix a pom-pom at the top of the cap using your crochet hook and hide the yarn ends at the back.
How to knit a scarf for a boy:
1. Cast on 33 stitches using blue yarn.
Work 60 rows in the same manner as you knitted the cap, changing blue, grey and burgundy yarns.
Then work 180 rows in rib combined with garter stitch.
Work 60 rows using the stripped pattern and cast off by knitting 2 stitches together.
Fasten the yarn ends at the back of the scarf using your crochet hook.
Carefully iron the scarf over a thin piece of cloth using steam function.
Now your knitted scarf and cap are ready. Enjoy them!
